StrangerLine is an alternative to Emerald Chat with all the great things about it, but without the two things people don't like: The gated (and paid) tier with gated features like filters, and a gamed reputation system. These are the things that deserve to be credited to Emerald Chat. However, there are two things that would make people want to switch alternatives and both have been well documented:
The paywall. The main thing is free, but the extras that make Emerald match better - gender filters, priority matching, ad removal - all require an Emerald Gold subscription. Most people don't like to have to pay to minimize randomness on a random chat website.
The flaws in the operation of karma system. There is a lot more good in the reputation idea than bad, as it is good in theory, but it can be gamed by trolls, and not having a lot of karma is not that bad if you can buy it by paying extra with your credit card.

I have to admit that the karma system that Emerald has in place has some interesting ideas to it, but it is also a system that can be gamed, and you can buy karma packs, so the score doesn't necessarily reflect how someone is being. It also implies that you have this sort of continual profile-like layer attached to you.

Make voice notes in chat. Drop in a conversation without switching to a live call, with short voice messages - a quick and personal middle ground between typing and talking. It makes a chat look more human quicker.
Message after disconnect. Most random-chat websites, however, when you click on the next page, your chat will disappear. After the person walks away, you can send one more message with StrangerLine, otherwise it would be a pity to lose that good chat that ended too soon.
